Chapter · 06 · Getting Here
Mullin is intentionally remote. The roads are unpaved for the last stretch. That's also why it's quiet. Here's what to know before you go.
The final approach is on unpaved county road. A standard vehicle handles it fine in dry weather. After heavy rain, call ahead — 808-494-9820.

At the park · what's here
01
500 feet of Colorado River frontage. Bring your own gear — there's no rental here but the access is all yours.
02
The Colorado runs at an easy float pace through here. Bring your own tube or kayak — or borrow from a neighbor.
03
Wade in from the riverbank. The limestone bottom is visible in summer — swim at your own judgment of the current.
04
Walk the 1939 Regency Suspension Bridge. It sways. That's the point. It's still open to automobiles — the last one in Texas.
05
Mills County has virtually no light pollution. On clear nights, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Bring a blanket and set an alarm for 2am.
06
Lawn games on the grounds. Fire pits at every site. The kind of evening that starts at 4pm and ends when everyone finally admits they're tired.
When to come · the honest version
Best river flow. Wildflowers on the banks. Book early — this is when sites disappear fastest.
Hot by day, manageable by night. The river is the reason to be here — swim, tube, stay wet.
Best overall. Cooler nights, amber river light, fewer mosquitoes. Book weekends as early as possible.
Quiet and nearly empty. Cold by Texas standards, extraordinary stargazing. Best for those who mean it.
